Training
5 day Certificate course
Practical Colour Management
Faculties Paul Lindstrom, Malmo University, Sweden
Pongtorn Juntarawatt Gretag-Macbeth, Hong Kong
Delhi Don Bosco Technical Institute July 10 to 14, 2006
Chennai Anna University July 17 to 21, 2006
Infrastructure for the course will include four testing instruments and
profiling software from Gretag-Macbeth, both Mac and PC workstations,
desktop scanner, server, inkjet proofers. The establishments also contain imagesetters and printing presses for demonstrating the entire colour management loop and for test printing.
The faculty is Paul Lindstrom of Malmo University, Sweden and Pontorn
Juntarawatt of GretagMacbeth. The textbook that will be given to all
candidates is "Understanding Color Management" by Dr. A. Sharma.
The course fees are Rs. 25,000. All candidates will be colour vision tested and only those who pass the final exam will be given colour management certificates. Others will be given a participation certificate. The course will take place over five full working days. The fees only cover the course material and lunch and coffee. No accommodation is provided as a part of the course fees. However, IppStar will try and help out-of-town candidates with appropriate accommodation.
Monitor calibration
- Making sure that the environment for calibration is correct -- lighting, colour of walls etc., and what are the industry standard
parameters.
- Making sure that the hardware ie the monitor is worth calibrating.
- Once the calibration is complete, how to check if the calibration
is correct, and if the calibration is faulty then should we redo the
calibration or edit the monitor profile (how to differentiate if the
calibration should be redone or editing the profile can be a good
option).
- Extended gamut workflows like Hexachrome can be or cannot be
viewed correctly on a particular monitor.
Scanner calibration
- Making a scanner profile and checking the profile.
- Are there any industry standard parameters or practices?
Digital camera
- Making a camera profile and checking the profile.
- How to make sure that the results that we are getting from the profile are correct ie should we keep a DC target below every image
so that the target is maintained while correcting the images in
Photoshop or any such industry specific practice that needs to be
taken care of while shooting an image.
- RAW plugin, some detail of how to use it.
Press
- What are the industry standard parameters?
- Checking TAC (total ink coverage) of press on specific paper stock/ink combination etc.
- Checking greys and getting correct values.
- Checking densities and dot gains to identifying correct densities
for paper stock and ink combinations because the industry standard densities values might not always be the correct densities to get best results because they are done under ideal conditions which is not the case in real world
- GCR and UCR fundamentals and how to correctly identify what to use when and why and how to get correct results (This could be here or in the scanner subhead or both).
- Correct practice for printing of target charts like ECI or IT8 while
profiling a press.
- Identifying problems with the press profile and correcting them maybe by redoing the profiling or correcting the profile.
- Extended gamut workflows like Hexachrome, what test targets are used, how to make profiles for extended gamut workflows, what ink limits are required, how to check the profiles for extended gamut workflows, what are correct practices or industry specific parameters etc.
Inkjet printers
- Checking TAC for a specific media type
- Proofing for extended gamut workflows
- Checking and correcting the profile to understand if the profile needs to be redone or corrected.
Also likely to be covered are aspects like device link profiles, abstract profiles etc.. Why do we need these profiles and how to put them to use? Possibly third party tools to check profiles.
Everyone in the course will be taught to make a good profile, and to know if the profile is correct or not, because if the profile is made and not checked for its correctness then the whole idea of colour management may be defeated. Checking of the profile will be stressed at all stages
